God's math is mathing!

If you are struggling to believe, having doubts God exists today, or wondering if he really cares about the details of your life.... check out the Fibonacci sequence! This is pretty incredible!


"The Fibonacci sequence is a series of numbers where each number is the sum of the two preceding numbers." Here are the first 14 numbers in this infinite sequence: 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, and 233.

Guess where we see this sequence show up, not just in a math classroom, but in biology and more specifically in creation! Plant leaves following this "Golden Ratio" benefit from maximum exposure to sunlight, efficiently using space so that each leaf avoids casting shade on the others as much as possible. Talk about attention to detail!


Sunflower heads follow two Fibonacci sequences, one clockwise and one counter clockwise. This allows for even distribution of the seeds, which maximizes their growth.



Check out this nautilus shell. The Fibonacci sequence allows the shell to expand evenly without changing it's shape. The spiral shape creates strength in the shell, helping protect it from external pressure and damage.

We would never say that an incredible work of art spontaneously generated itself, right? We see a painting and we know it has a painter. We see beautiful architecture and we know there was an architect.

So why when we see creation, with mind blowing mathematical precision, would we say it does not have a Creator? Or that He doesn't care?

Creation most certainly has a Creator who's math is mathing as they say!

"God's creation reveals his glory through the heavens and skies, which proclaim his work and knowledge day and night" (Psalm 19:1-6). Consider the F-factor today (the Fibonacci sequence) and let it wow all parts of you about the glory and majesty of our Creator God! And if you are struggling with God the Father, remember his only Son, Jesus, "is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word..." (Hebrews 1:3). "The Son is the image of God, and all things were created through and for him, including things visible and invisible" (Colossians 1:15-17).

But what about suffering?

We are often tempted to say, "But the math isn't mathing when it comes to suffering." Consider this, the pain and loss we experience do not define God's character. Pain and heartache instead point to the Fall, to the impacts of sin and being sinned against. Creation, including this precise and infinite Fibonacci spiral, and God's Word, points us to our infinite Creator, who is all good, all wise all powerful, crazy detailed, and ultra personal. He not only enabled you to have approximately 23,040 breaths in the past 24 hours, but he knows the exact number of hairs on your head at any given moment! This is a God who cares about the details, cares about the past, the present, the future, and has a sovereign and good plan to ultimately reconcile, redeem and restore all things that have been marred and grief stricken by the curse of sin, in a way that will be exceedingly, abundantly beyond what we could ever ask for or imagine! (Ephesians 3:20-21)

How can we be sure of this?

Because of Jesus' life, death, and resurrection! Christ points us to God's personhood. He is a suffering Savior, acquainted with bitterest grief. He came to rescue, redeem, and restore His exquisite creation, who have been tainted by the sin they brought upon themselves (see the Garden of Eden), from living under the curse of death. Spoiler alert! ;) He has already written a beautiful end to this redemption story. The final episode is out and the last enemy to be destroyed is.. you guessed it, death! (I Corinthians 15:26) (Insert your favorite epic soundtrack here, and read this next part slowly and deliberately because it is about to get real...) "When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality..." Imagine weak and failing bodies, transformed. The dead being raised to life, in THE most cosmic cinematic moment of all time.

THEN the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory!” 


Now a hear a chorus of all who have experienced the curse of death crying out in unison saying... “Where, O death, is your victory? 

Where, O death, is your sting?” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. The risen redeemed, knowing their eternal future, rise together, linking arms. Resolute determination in their eyes, they stand beneath this battle cry, given with the fervor of William Wallace in that iconic Braveheart scene... Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters,

stand firm.

Let nothing move you.

Always give yourselves fully

to the work of the Lord,

because you know

that your labor in the Lord

is not in vain!

(I Corinthians 15: 54-58) If in this moment you find yourself caught in a downward spiral, in a trench of despair, pause and remember God's math is mathing today. Let the the Golden Fibonacci Spirals spiral you upwards towards God the loving Father, Jesus the Savior Son and the Holy indwelling Spirit, able to remind you of the truth: you are children of God, destined for glory!
