About this presentation: Informative presentation will be followed by guided expressive arts activities and an opportunity to reflect and share with other counselors about the process. No art experience needed, simply a willingness to explore. Bring a few sheets of white paper and art supplies such as colored pencils, markers, or old magazines, a glue stick, and scissors. Learning Objectives: By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to: 1. Identify at least three clinical benefits of incorporating expressive arts into therapeutic practice. 2. Demonstrate at least one expressive arts intervention suitable for use with clients. 3. Describe how expressive arts interventions can support emotional processing, regulation, and insight. 4. Integrate expressive arts techniques within a Christian worldview, including reflection on spiritual themes and meaning-making. Also an artist, her work is shaped by both professional training and personal experience with the restorative power of creativity. In her own journey, art restored to her a voice that childhood trauma had stollen, helping her rediscover language, meaning, and hope. This experience continues to shape her belief that creativity can serve as a gentle and meaningful pathway toward restoration and renewed connection. Lisa integrates expressive arts with narrative and trauma-informed approaches, viewing creativity as a pathway for clients to explore to make sense of the stories that shape them, particularly when traditional verbal processing feels limited or overwhelming. She is passionate about helping individuals reconnect with their voice, engage their stories with compassion, and move toward greater integration and growth. Lisa will graduate from Liberty University in May and plans to begin a counseling practice that utilizes creativity as one of the pathways for recovering from trauma and rediscovering personal meaning. Additionally, she will develop further competency in utilizing creative approaches with EMDR by pursuing EMDR certification. Through teaching and consultation, she hopes to encourage other counselors to thoughtfully and ethically incorporate expressive arts into clinical work, creating spaces where clients can encounter creativity, restoration, and renewed meaning as they tend the stories that shape their lives.

It explains that addiction often begins as a way to cope with overwhelming or unmet emotional needs—stress, shame, loneliness, fear, or unresolved trauma. The Cycle of Addiction: Over time, the very thing meant to numb those feelings ends up intensifying them, creating a cycle that feels impossible to break. It also highlights how early experiences of emotional neglect or lack of attunement shape a person’s relationship with their feelings. Early Experiences: When caregivers consistently miss, dismiss, or misread a child’s emotional cues, that child grows up without a strong internal roadmap for understanding or soothing their own emotions. This kind of emotional disconnection can make feelings feel unpredictable or unsafe, and addiction can become a temporary, makeshift way to create comfort, control, or numbness. Healing is Possible: Most importantly, the presentation emphasizes that healing is possible. When individuals learn to understand and name their feelings, they gain new pathways to cope without turning to addiction. Reconnection—to themselves, to supportive relationships, and to a sense of safety—opens the door to real change.
